I’ve had more time on my hands after graduation and transitioning to work life. Though it has recently been hectic moving my belongings, I’ve also had time to do things like read patents. There was no real motivation except the explicit realization that I hadn’t read up to 5 patents in my life.
It turns out some of them are not complicated and are pretty interesting. I selected the top ones accordingly. Most are software related (I just searched Apple on the US Patent Office site at some point.)
Generally, algorithms are difficult to patent and even harder to enforce because you must show that they are encroaching on exactly the procedure you describe. Patents even have a “claims” number that specifies the number of variations the patent protects.
I’ll keep this short so that you actually check out the most interesting ones.

Siri-esque patent from Apple filed during covid - here
Surprisingly, a tobacco smoking device filed at the same time - here
An anhydrous (without water) cosmetic stick by Procter and Gamble - here
Youtube patent for searching through comments by sentiment - here
As I transition to work mode, I will likely post more essays, letters, and updates, but we’ll see. Hope you’re doing something to take care of yourself today cause why not.
